Enrolment Policy
Introduction
The philosophy of Castletroy College is based on the education of the whole person. This co-educational College fosters the intellectual, spiritual, social, personal, artistic, physical and vocational development of all its students. The confidence and self-esteem of our students is promoted through a range of curricular and extra-curricular activities. Castletroy College’s enrolment policy is set out in accordance with the provisions of the Education Act, 1998. The Board of Management of Castletroy College trusts that this policy will assist parents in relation to enrolment matters. The Principal will be available to clarify any queries arising from the policy.
The College which is a partnership initiative involving County Limerick VEC and the Diocese of Limerick operates in accordance with the regulations laid down by the Department of Education & Science. This enrolment policy is informed by the principles of inclusiveness, equality of access and participation for all children from the local community taking account of the resources and funding provided by the Department of Education & Science. Where an applicant has a special educational need, Castletroy College will require a copy of all relevant information and documentation relating to the student. This information is required to establish whether the College can offer a suitable educational programme to meet the appropriate needs of the particular student.
Application Procedure
Castletroy College works in conjunction with the other second level schools, as listed over, in Limerick City in matters relating to enrolment procedures. The common closing date for receipt of applications is advertised in the local press.
Enrolment
Decisions in relation to applications for enrolment are made in accordance with the school enrolment policy as outlined herein. Restrictions are placed on the numbers of available places by the size of the building, the limits on class sizes and the overall number of students for which the College can cater. Students must be at least 12 years of age before the 1 January, of their first academic year at the school. The Board regards the provision of education to the children of the local community as its core mission. Where the number of applicants exceeds the number of available places the Board will be guided first and foremost by considerations of cementing and fostering community cohesiveness.
In this regard preference will be given to applicants in the following order:-
Brothers and sisters of existing students
Children of College Staff
Children normally residing in the immediate locality of the College
Children attending national schools in the immediate locality of the College
Remaining applicants.
Where the number of applicants, in any of the above categories, exceeds the number of available places a system of random selection will apply with a waiting list being established from this selection. If a place becomes available subsequently, it will be offered to the first person on the waiting list at that time.
