A hufe congratulations to Sean Fitzgerald, 5th year, who has been chosen on the team to represent Ireland at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), a prestigious international mathematics competition held this year in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, from 3 – 14 July 2018. This is an outstanding achievement, especially for a fifth year student.
Congratulations also, to James Chen (1st year) who won the recent regional final of the Irish Junior Maths Competition. James’ score in the final would place him as the 6th best First Year student in the whole country! Well done also to Myron Butler who came in second place.
James Chen with his trophy:

Tennis title for the U16s

As the school year draws to a close, we would like to congratulate our U16 Boys Tennis Team on their recent win in the Munster Schools Tennis Championship
Team members included: Rory Clothier (Capt) Alan O Brien, Ciaran Fitzgerald, Alex Carragher and Joe Kelly.
Castletroy College has a strong tradition of participating in this competition since 2004, reaching the finals on 5 occasions and now winning it outright twice. A wonderful achievement!
The round robin stages began back in February with Castletroy putting in solid performances throughout securing themselves an all important home semi final in early May against Ard Scoil Na Mara, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Another strong and steady performance gave them a well deserving place in this years Finals against local neighbours Glenstal Abbey.
All Secondary Schools Tennis Finals were held in the picturesque venue of Rushbrooke Tennis Club, Cobh, Co. Cork last week. The same format that was used for previous rounds remained in place for the final. 5 matches including 2 singles and 3 doubles would determine the winners.
Rory Clothier and Alan O Brien, both winners of this competition at U14 level showed both the experience and determination needed for finals day as they secured 2 early valuable points for Castletroy with wins in their singles matches. Glenstal just managed to keep themselves in with a chance by winning the first of the doubles matches in a close championship tie break decider. It was 2:1 to Castletroy going in to the last 2 matches. All still to play for! As play continued in the warm summer sunshine it was Alan O Brien and Alex Carragher that managed to bring Castletroy over the line taking the first of the doubles matches on a 6-2, 6-3 score line. Game, Set and Match! There was great delight as the boys were presented with their trophy and individual engraved Munster Medals. This is a great achievement and we are very proud of all involved.
Special mention must also go to our U16 Girls Tennis Team who reached the semi final stages of the Munster Schools Competition. Team members included: Abigail McCarthy, Abbie Hayden, Sarah Fitzgearld and Aisling Doran. They had many tough matches in difficult weather conditions during the season but can be very proud of their achievements.
We would like to thank Cora Fitzgerald and Jennifer Colford (parents) who mentored both teams throughout the season and gave up so much of their time for training sessions and fixtures.
Finally can we wish all our Castletroy College Tennis players the very best of luck as both Junior Club and Open Competitions kick off for the summer season.
